Encinitas has been a destination for surfing since the mid-20th century, with Swami's Beach and Moonlight Beach offering breaks for all skill levels and coastal villages that make the sport part of daily life.
Swami's Beach, accessed by a steep stairway from Swami's Park, is one of Southern California's most recognized surf breaks, named after Paramahansa Yogananda, the spiritual teacher who founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in the city in the 1920s. Moonlight Beach, a state beach operated by the City of Encinitas, sits one mile west of I-5 at Encinitas Boulevard and offers unusual car access on a level lot, making it approachable for families new to surfing as well as experienced riders. The break at Cardiff State Beach, nearby, draws surfers who prefer the reef and offers oceanfront camping for visiting surfers and swimmers.
The Switchfoot Bro-Am, an annual free outdoor festival founded in 2005 at Moonlight Beach, draws hundreds to watch a surf competition and live music, with proceeds funding grants to nonprofits serving youth through music, art and surfing programs. Local surf schools offer lessons to beginners, and the coastal highway that connects Encinitas to Carlsbad and Oceanside has become known for its villages with a relaxed SoCal beach atmosphere. For many residents and visitors, surfing is not a weekend hobby but part of the rhythm of living near the Pacific.
